Free Credit Report Self-Help

Understand your credit reports, recognize possible inaccuracies, and learn how to dispute errors yourself. These resources are free for everyone: no client account, purchase, subscription, or referral is required.

Your rights and your next steps

Credit reporting companies and furnishers have legal obligations to investigate eligible disputes. Consumers can use these rights directly at no charge.

1. Obtain your reports

Access credit reports through the federally authorized website. Save a copy for your records and check each bureau separately.

2. Identify factual errors

Look for accounts that are not yours, incorrect balances, payment-history errors, duplicate listings, or dates that can be verified as inaccurate.

3. Dispute inaccuracies

Explain exactly what is incorrect, why it is incorrect, and include copies of supporting evidence. Keep copies of everything you submit.

4. Contact the reporting business

When appropriate, dispute inaccurate information with both the credit reporting company and the business that supplied the information.

5. Handle identity theft

When an account results from identity theft, use the federal recovery resources instead of treating it as an ordinary reporting error.

6. Understand the limits

Accurate negative information generally cannot be removed simply because it harms your score. No legitimate service can guarantee a deletion or credit-score increase.
